The feud between Nicki Minaj and Iggy Azalea just won’t go away…even with Nicki trying desperately to put it behind her.
Minaj opened up on Iggy Azalea once again – more specifically her acceptance speech at the BET Awards – in the new issue of Fader Magazine , hoping to clarify her now famous comments.
The speech in question took place after Minaj won her fifth consecutive BET Best Female Hip Hop Artist award. After opening with words of gratitude for winning, Nicki steered her speech in an unusual direction, uttering the now infamous lines: “What I want the world to know about Nicki Minaj is that when you hear Nicki Minaj spit, Nicki Minaj wrote it. No, no, no—no shade.”
To many in the rap community and the internet at large, those words were a direct shot at Iggy Azalea, who was rumored to have had ghost writers pen her lyrics. Afterward, Nicki denied she was taking shots at Iggy and has since gone out of her way to interpret for the media the intended meaning of her speech. She tells Fader :
“My point of saying what I said was that women need to have a perspective. If we’re out here saying that we’re so confident, and we’re so this and so that, but we don’t even trust ourselves to write down our own thoughts and spit it on a beat? It just doesn’t add up.”
She then mentioned her idol Lauryn Hill, adding that, “I knew those were Lauryn’s words, and it made me fall in love with her mind.”
Perhaps in her own weird way, Nicki Minaj’s attempts to clarify her speech is more of a call to action for female rappers to become more vocal on their lyrics. Azalea on the other hand, hasn’t let herself get swept into the hype surrounding their supposed feud. As previously reported by Inquistir , days after Minaj’s speech, Iggy posted her response to the controversy on Instagram page, firing back at the media for causing things to spiral out of control:
“I have to say the general explosion of pettiness online in the last few days is hard to ignore & honestly… lame. If I had won the BET award that would’ve been great but it wasn’t my year & I don’t mind — so you shouldn’t either. Generally speaking, I’m unbothered by anything that ‘happened’ at the BET awards and just feel worn out by everyone trying to make me have wars with people all the time.”
What do you think? Was Nicki Minaj taking shots at Iggy Azalea? And will this feud ever truly be over?
