Nicki Minaj Going Back To Her ‘Hip-Hop Roots’ With ‘The Pink Print’

Nicki Minaj has no plans to revisit the world of pop music with her new album.

Quite a few folks believed the rapper wasn’t doing her career any favors by recording tunes like “Super Bass” and “Starships” a few years ago. Although Minaj certainly has no regrets about these endeavors — both songs sold incredibly well as singles — she wants to ditch that sugary pop sound for The Pink Print .

While promoting her box office hit The Other Woman , Nicki Minaj dropped a few hints about her next proper studio recording. Although she’s not willing to spill any specifics about the endeavor just yet, fans shouldn’t expect another straightforward pop song on the album. If “Lookin A**” is any indication, Minaj is ready to come strong.

“The tracks on [my next album] are back to my hip-hop roots. And I don’t think it’s something that I’m necessarily trying to do. As soon as I started working on my new album, that’s just the songs that I’ve been writing,” the rapper told MTV News .

She added, “I’m just gonna do what my heart tells me to do.”

Apparently Nicki Minaj’s heart is telling her to pursue more acting gigs as well. The rapper also told MTV News that her role in The Other Woman gave her the confidence to tackle more involved roles.

“I am going on auditions, and I’m trying to find the right role with the right director and the right writers. I want to be part of something from the beginning stage this time, and I want the role to be custom-made for me,” Minaj explained.

She added, “I have such a versatile personality. Some days I feel like I wanna do a Will Ferrell comedy; some days I feel like I wanna do more like a ‘Set It Off’-type of movie with some other young black actresses and like creating a movement with that. And sometimes I think, maybe I could do ‘X-Men’ or something.”

Nicki Minaj’s first proper foray into the world of cinema was a pretty big hit with audiences over the weekend. The $40 million R-rated comedy found its way to the top of the North America box office with $24 million in ticket sales . The film’s worldwide total presently stands at a very healthy $47 million.
