Houston, TX – A newborn girl was found still alive after being wrapped inside a Walmart sack on left on a Houston street. A woman walking her dog found the baby inside the plastic bag on Tuesday. The newborn still had her umbilical cord attached to her tiny tummy.
The baby inside a Walmart sack was taken to the Texas Children’s Hospital where she is reportedly in good condition, the Daily Mail notes. Houston police officers are still looking for the woman who discarded her baby in a plastic sack not long after giving birth.
The abandoned newborn was near a section of fence surrounding the Stonegate Villas Apartments around 7 pm, the Houston Chronicle notes. The dog alerted the woman to the bag. At first the Texas woman thought the Walmart sack contained a dead animal. The unnamed rescuer was reportedly quite shocked to find a baby inside.
The newborn girl’s temperature was normal, alerting emergency workers that she had not been left outside for very long. The baby was unclothed. Although the umbilical cord had not been clamped, the baby appeared to have been cleaned up after the birth.
Sgt. Gordon Trott had this to say about the baby found inside a Walmart sack:
“If it had not been for the resident that came out to walk her dogs, that child may have laid there all night, possibly would’ve died.”
Police offices were surprised that the baby was abandoned on the sidewalk and not taken to a designated safe space. Texas is one of many states with a Safe Haven law. Such mandates allow a baby to be dropped off at any fire station or hospital without any legal penalties.
Do you think the mother should be charged with a crime for leaving her baby in a Walmart sack on the sidewalk?
