The new trailer for the upcoming RoboCop remake has finally arrived online.
After teasing the new clip for most of the week, the boys and girls at MGM debuted the latest trailer for the José Padilha’s re-telling of Paul Verhoeven’s classic 1987 action flick on Thursday. Check out the latest clip from the flick towards the bottom of this article.
The RoboCop remake tells the story of slain cop Alex Murphy. In an effort to clean up the streets of Detroit, OmniCorp transformers Murphy into the future of law enforcement. The Killing star Joel Kinnaman tackles the role made famous by Peter Weller.
Here’s the official synopsis for Padilha’s flick:
“The year is 2028 and multinational conglomerate OmniCorp is at the center of robot technology. Their drones are winning American wars around the globe and now they want to bring this technology to the home front. Alex Murphy is a loving husband, father and good cop doing his best to stem the tide of crime and corruption in Detroit. After he is critically injured in the line of duty, OmniCorp utilizes their remarkable science of robotics to save Alex’s life. He returns to the streets of his beloved city with amazing new abilities, but with issues a regular man has never had to face before.”
As a fan of Paul Verhoeven’s classic flick, this writer was definitely a little concerned about the upcoming remake. Although the trailer could be lulling me into a false sense of security, the latest clip definitely paints a much better picture than the previous previews.
The RoboCop remake hasn’t had the easiest journey to the silver screen. Fan backlash over set photos was immediate, and may have prompted MGM to push the film’s release date from August of 2013 to February of 2014. Even this writer was guilty of passing judgment on the remake ahead of its release. That’s not something I’m particularly proud of.
Joel Kinnaman addressed the remake during an interview with Collider last year. In his opinion, the cast and crew did their best to honor the original movie.
He explained:
“I’m not saying that ‘RoboCop’ is Shakespeare, but it’s a way to… we’re retelling. That’s what we do as human beings. We retell our favorite stories. That’s what we’ve done since we were sitting around campfires. It’s a part of the human spirit. It doesn’t have to be negative to creativity. It can be completely opposite. That’s how you can break new ground by rethinking something that’s already been done.”
Fans can judge for themselves when the RoboCop remake hits theaters on Feburary 12, 2014. What do you think about the latest trailer?
