There’s some strange Fantastic Four news in the wind – courtesy of Kate Mara – that some of you, or probably, many of you, aren’t going to like.
Film fans might be surprised to find out that a Fantastic Four reboot is already in the works at Marvel even though the orange paint on Michael Chiklis’ muscles isn’t dry yet. This Fantastic Four reboot, scheduled for a 2015 release, will feature Kate Mara of House of Cards fame, as Sue Storm, AKA the Invisible Woman.
When Mara was recently asked about the Fantastic Four in an interview with Esquire Mexico , the new Sue Storm’s responses raised some eyebrows.
The interviewer asked Mara how she felt being the Invisible Woman in the Fantastic Four , indicating that it was a big responsibility.
“I don’t feel more responsibility with this role than I’ve felt with others. I understand that there are many fans of the Fantastic Four and I guess they expect a lot from me, but I prefer not to be pressured by that. We are also trying to create a new way of seeing these superheroes, I’m focusing on making her [Sue Storm] as real as possible.”
The interviewer then asked Kate Mara if she liked comic books, and her answer might disturb fans of the Fantastic Four :
“I’ve never been a fan of comics, I’ve never actually read one. I was going to for this movie but the director said it wasn’t necessary. Well, actually he told us that we shouldn’t do it because the plot won’t be based on any history of anything published.”
Scarily enough, the director of Guardians of the Galaxy told his actors the same thing according to Moviepilot. “Don’t read up on the comics.”
“…the plot won’t be based on any history of anything published.” There’s a few different possibilities here. The most glaring one – the most disturbing one – is that the Fantastic Four reboot will completely neglect everything and anything from the comics…
How likely is that?
Not very. The idea that a studio that’s made billions of dollars in the last few years by being fairly faithful to its comic predecessors would change its business model while truckloads of cash are rolling in through the doors seems ludicrous.
Still, it is Hollywood.
Another possibility concerning Mara’s comments on the Fantastic Four reboot is that she got the facts wrong. Perhaps the plotline is wholly original – however, the origin stories and the relationships between the Fantastic Four members are still in place. We can hope.
Still another possibility is that what was said was lost in translation from Spanish to English. Maybe?
At any rate, the Fantastic Four reboot, directed by Josh Trank and starring Kate Mara as Sue Storm, hits theaters in 2015.
