It’s official — 2013 is the year of the superhero. Zack Snyder broke on to the scene with his gritty take on the Man of Steel , and since the summer blockbuster hit, television has got on board in telling the greek-like stories that come with centering a drama around graphic novel folklore. With the surprising success of ABC’s Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D ., Netflix , a threatening streaming service, that has been producing quality work is also looking for their superhero content.
Disney’s Marvel and Netflix have decided to join forces to develop a historical four series epic tale, plus a mini-series of epic proportions. Netflix is a streaming service that has bucked against the conventions of how we consume content. It has opened up the market for original programming in ways we couldn’t imagine, while turning a new leaf for creatives who want to collaborate without selling their content to an uncompromising network.
While Netflix has been receiving raves for their original programming, if they’re going to meet their competition it’s best to get on board with what’s popular. In the case of Netflix the streaming service is not only looking to match what’s on your screen at home, but is looking to reinvent the wheel of Marvel by doing something different.
In 2015 Marvel TV will bring four of the most well-known action heroes for live-action adventures on the streaming service. The series will be led by a focus on Daredevil, followed by Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, and Luke Cage. These stories are said to unfold over years of original programming for Netflix and will take the viewer into a gritty New York. So far Netflix has committed to four, thirteen episode series and a mini series event that reimagines Marvel’s The Defenders .
The President of Marvel Entertainment said of the Netflix deal:
“This deal is unparalleled in its scope and size, and reinforces our commitment to deliver Marvel’s brand, content and characters across all platforms of storytelling. Netflix offers an incredible platform for the kind of rich storytelling that is Marvel’s specialty.”
Netflix’s original Marvel content will join already established series including Arrested Development , House of Cards , and Orange Is the New Black .
