Mortal Kombat: Legacy director Kevin Tancharoen has dropped out of the upcoming movie and web series.
Although the talented filmmaker is largely responsible for getting the next motion picture off the ground, Tancharoen recently announced that he’s no longer involved with the flick or the series. According to Worst Previews , it’s believed that the director quit when he realized Warner Bros. probably wouldn’t let him tackle the big-screen project.
“After three years of ‘Mortal Kombat,’ I’ve decided to move on to other creative opportunities. I wish everyone involved in the movie big success. Thanks!” he posted on Twitter.
Coming Soon reports that the Mortal Kombat web series will move forward with Tancharoen’s involvement. However, his departure is definitely bad news for those who thoroughly enjoyed the time, energy, and respect he put into the project.
Mortal Kombat: Legacy II kicked things off in September. The series stars Casper Van Dien, Brian Tee, Mark Dacascos, and Harry Shum, Jr. Ian Anthony Dale returns as Scorpion while Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa reprises his role as Shang Tsung.
Here’s the synopsis for the new season of the series:
“This new season uncovers the rivalries and histories of these fierce warriors as Raiden and his recruits clash against the dark forces of Outworld. Chronicling the tournament and the interweaving storylines of the most beloved Kombatants, fans also will learn of the complex relationship between Liu Kang and Kung Lao and revisit the complicated family dynamic of Kitana and Mileena.”
For the moment, it’s unclear if Warner Bros. intends to move forward with another theatrical release as of this writing. Screen Rant reported two years ago that Kevin Tancharoen was tapped to direct the project while Oren Uziel would handle scripting duties.
The Inquisitr previously reported that Mortal Kombat: Legacy producer Lance Sloane wanted to release a new video game around the same time the flick hit theaters. News of the projects arrived at the San Diego Comic-Con over the summer.
“It’s just figuring out the business side of it and when we would do it and when we would launch it and how do we sync up with the launch of the game that they’re working on now. It’s not 100 [percent] yet, but we’re getting closer every day,” Sloan explained at the time.
Are you disappointed that Mortal Kombat: Legacy director Kevin Tancharoen is no longer involved with the web series or the proposed movie?
