X-Men: First Class director Matthew Vaughn will tackle the big screen adaptation of Mark Millar and Dave Gibbons’ The Secret Service .

The Kick-Ass director began developing the project back in 2011 . However, Universal Pictures decided not to move forward with the production. This left the door open for 20th Century Fox to swoop in and pick up rights to the flick.

The Secret Service will serve as Vaughn’s first directing gig since 2011’s X-Men: First Class . He famously decided to pass on the upcoming sequel. Although he was rumored to be in the running for Star Wars: Episode VII , the job would ultimately land in the lap of J.J. Abrams.

Although the film doesn’t have a proper synopsis as of this writing, the listing for the upcoming hardcover collection of The Secret Service on Amazon sums up what the story is about.

“The world’s greatest secret agent is on the most exciting case of his career. But will the end of the world as know it take a back seat to training his street-punk nephew to be the next James Bond? Meanwhile, what’s the secret link between a series of kidnapped sci-fi stars, the murder of an entire town, and a dark secret from inside Mount Everest? Under Uncle Jack’s supervision, Gary’s spy skills and confidence blossom–but when the duo learn what’s behind the celebrity kidnappings, the knowledge comes at a price. The conspiracy begins to unravel, but who can be trusted when so many prominent figures seem to be involved? It’s a must-be-seen-to-be-believed action spectacle!”

Matthew Vaughn and Kick-Ass co-writer Jane Goldman recently finished work on the script for The Secret Service . Production on the adaptation is slated to begin this August . 20th Century Fox hopes to have the film in the can and in theaters by next year.
