June 9 was a busy day for the Marvel and their upcoming cinematic run of Black Panther . What began the day as just the release of the movie poster ended in something quite a bit more substantial. As promised earlier in the day, a teaser trailer for Black Panther has been released, and it takes an action-packed look at Black Panther, his kingdom, and the dangers inside and outside of Wakanda.
Marvel Entertainment dropped the trailer late on June 9, posting the teaser trailer for Black Panther on their YouTube site and social media feeds. This came on top of the release of the official poster for the film which was also released on social media earlier in the same day, garnering a slew of praise and criticism for its somewhat odd design.
When the poster was released, Marvel also promised to deliver the trailer during Game 4 of the NBA Finals between the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Golden State Warriors. Sure enough, the trailer seemingly did what the poster could not quite accomplish. It drew an incredible buzz for its intense couple minutes giving viewers an idea of what exactly they can expect out of a Black Panther film when it releases in 2018.

The trailer, which runs just under two minutes takes viewers inside the life of Chadwick Boseman’s T’Challa, set to the backdrop of “Legend Has It” by American hip-hop group Run the Jewels. We get our first glimpses of the remote kingdom of Wakanda, its people, and the dangers T’Challa undertakes to keep his people safe from the world outside. It isn’t long before we’re seeing acrobatics and martial arts, not to mention T’Challa in the iconic Black Panther suit, laying into adversaries and putting them in their place in Wakanda’s defense.
Of course, Boseman doesn’t do it alone. We also get glimpses at characters like Andy Serkis’ Klaw, Martin Freeman’s Everett Ross, Michael B. Jordan’s Erik Kilmonger, Lupita Nyong’o’s Nakia, and more. We only get tidbits of each character, outside of a tone setting interrogation between Serkis and Freeman at the beginning, but the sight of so many players in action sets a stage for the Black Panther movie that has fans buzzing and interest piqued about what Marvel is doing with its newest superhero film.
Interestingly enough, though the sooner arriving Spider-Man: Homecoming almost goes out of its way to link back to Captain America : Civil War and the Avengers by proxy , Black Panther pays little to no homage to what came before it. Spider-Man: Homecoming has been advertised with various clips showing Spidey’s perspective in the context of Civil War , and Tony Stark obviously plays a big role in the film.
In contrast, Black Panther ‘s teaser trailer pointed to far more of a standalone situation outside of the onscreen realm of many other Marvel films. Certainly, it’s only two minutes compared to the wide variety of trailers that have been released for Spider-Man: Homecoming already, but it’s notable nonetheless seemingly in setting Black Panther apart in its own story from the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for the time being. Even the first trailer for Thor: Ragnarok wasted no time in establishing Thor’s previous relationship with the Incredible Hulk.
No doubt at some point, there will be some level of connection that ties Black Panther back to the rest of the universe it inhabits, but it has come out swinging with something unique to itself for now. We have our first sights of the cast in action, as well as the Black Panther in and out of costume, on and off his home turf of Wakanda. The day may have come off to a shaky start with the release of the poster, but the Black Panther teaser trailer has more than done its part to create interest for the film.
