Marvel Cinematic Universe: Netflix’s ‘Daredevil’ Season 2 Trailer Reveals The Punisher & Elektra

In the world of comic-book-turned-cinema, there has been a lot to look forward to as of late. Just last weekend, Deadpool crushed box-office records as the first R-Rated installment of any Marvel film or franchise. If you arrived to Deadpool on time, then you probably saw the trailer for Captain America: Civil War , which hits theaters in less than three months. From the other Marvel movie franchise, you probably caught a glimpse of X-Men: Apocalypse , which is set to be released just weeks after Civil War . From the DC side of things, you saw trailers for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad , both DC Extended Universe films due out before the end of this Summer.

If all of that wasn’t enough, Netflix and Marvel released the first part of a two-part trailer for Season 2 of Daredevil , a series that is a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). While it’s clear that Matt Murdock will be wrestling with the morality of his vigilante brand of justice, it also confirmed the inclusion of antihero The Punisher (Jon Bernthal) and seductive mercenary Elektra (Élodie Yung). While the season premiere is still over a month away (March 18), the second part of the trailer is supposed to be released on February 25.

Netflix used the entire first season of Daredevil to really build his character. It wasn’t until the very end that he had the Daredevil costume and had revealed his secret identity and powers to his closest confidants. While trying to make Hell’s Kitchen a better city, he continually ran into conflicts with crime lords that wanted him eliminated — the most daunting of which was Wilson Fisk.

The Punisher has appeared on the silver screen thrice since 1989. The character was played by Dolph Lundgren in the first film, and then by Thomas Jane in the 2004 reboot. In 2008, Ray Stevenson played the titular character in Punisher: War Zone , yet another Punisher reboot. Frank Castle (aka The Punisher) has been appearing in Marvel comics since the 1970s, most notably running into Spider-Man and Daredevil, both on multiple occasions. Not unlike Wilson Fisk and Matt Murdock, Castle believes what he’s doing is a necessary means to his desired end.

According to Marvel comics of the early 1980s, Elektra Natchios was a love-interest of Daredevil as they studied together in college. In the comics, Daredevil revealed his gifts to Elektra as they were falling in love. It is not clear how far, if at all, the Netflix version of the story will deviate from the current Marvel canon. In 2005, Jennifer Garner played the eponymous role in Elektra , which was a spin-off of 2003’s Daredevil movie, starring Ben Affleck.

As noted by Cinema Blend , in addition to another season of Daredevil , Netflix and Marvel already have plans to produce another season of Marvel’s Jessica Jones , a closely-tied season of Marvel’s Luke Cage as well as a season each of Marvel’s Iron Fist and Marvel’s The Defenders . In addition to ABC’s current contributions to the MCU ( Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Marvel’s Agent Carter ), there are plans to make Marvel Damage Control , a sitcom about the crew that cleans up after the enormous Marvel battles.

Where To Watch

All 13 Season 2 episodes of Daredevil will be made available to stream on-demand via Netflix on March 18. All 13 episodes of Daredevil Season 1 are currently available on Netflix. The second part of the Season 2 trailer will be available to view on Marvel’s Youtube channel beginning February 25.
