The first trailer for Peter Berg’s real life drama Lone Survivor was released on Wednesday and it shows Mark Wahlberg, Taylor Kitsch, Ben Foster, and Emile Hirsch as NAVY Seals who are on a doomed mission in Afghanistan.
This is a tough one since the title sort of gives away the story, which is based on true events that took place in the ongoing war on terror.
The film is based on the book The Lone Survivor: The Eyewitness Account Of Operation Redwing And The Lost Heroes of Seal Team 10.
Berg’s production focuses on an elite unit of Navy SEALs who encountered an army of Taliban forces in the Afghanistan mountains during a raid in 2005.
As the title indicates, the events end with tragic consequences for most of the heroic soldiers; Berg’s film deals with the group’s fateful mission.
“We have seen the first cut of ‘Lone Survivor’ and it is soulful, gritty, tough, emotional and, quite frankly, remarkable,” Universal chairman Adam Fogelson said at CinemaCon back in April.
The story goes like this (Spoilers),
One night in June 2005, while hiding out the SEAL team encountered three Afghanistan shepherds, including a boy. The team debated sparing or killing the three shepherds but after a vote, team leader Michael Murphy had to make the decision.
To uphold the Rules of engagement , Murphy let the shepherds go. About an hour later, the four SEALs were surrounded by more than a hundred Taliban warriors. The two parties engaged, the odds drastically against the SEALs, all but Luttrell were killed in action.
The movie is written and directed by Berg and is produced by Envision Entertainment Corp.
Mark Wahlberg’s Lone Survivor is expected to be released in a limited engagement on December 27 and a bigger release on January 10, 2014.
