A Marine dad was banned from school over a “ Five Pillars of Islam ” essay assignment at La Plata High School in Maryland. Marine dad, Kevin Wood, an Iraq war veteran, said his daughter’s class was issued a mandatory assignment regarding the Islam religion. When he asked for an alternate homework assignment not related to the Muslim religion, he was reportedly banned from going to his daughter’s school ever again.
The La Plata High School juniors were told to write a three-page essay about the five pillars of Islam, detailing the beliefs and practices of the religion as well as being instructed to include information about the prophet Mohammed and Mecca.
The Marine Corps veteran said, “I don’t agree with it. You can’t study God or Christianity in school. You’ve got atheists suing schools for saying ‘God’ in the pledge and not being able to say prayers before football games, but we can force-feed our kids Islam.”
The Marine dad said when he discussed the Islamic essay with school officials in Maryland the La Plata High School administrators defended the five pillars essay and refused to permit his daughter to complete an assignment on a different topic.
“I told her straight up, ‘you could take that Muslim-loving piece of paper and shove it up your white [expletive]. If [students] can’t practice Christianity in school, they should not be allowed to practice Islam in school,” Kevin Wood sated during an interview with SoMD News .
La Plata High School spokeswoman Katie O’Malley-Simpson told the media that the Marine veteran was banned from the school campus because he allegedly threatened a “possible disruption” over the five pillars of Islam homework assignment. “We’re not teaching religion, we’re teaching world history,” O’Malley-Simpson added.
Melissa Wood, the Marine’s wife, said he did not make any threats. She added that school officials do not understand what he endured while serving his country in Iraq. “He lost friends, and he lost brothers and sisters to these people,” Mrs. Wood said.
The Wood family is still attempting to resolve the five pillars of Islam homework assignment with La Plata High School officials. Kevin Wood stated that his daughter would take an “F” on the mandatory Islam assignment if she was not granted the opportunity to complete the essay on a different topic.
How would you handle a five pillars of Islam or similar assignment being issued to your child?
