Man of Steel is officially the second highest grossing movie of 2013 behind Iron Man 3.
The film starring British actor Henry Cavill as Superman , has earned over $280 million domestically and around $340 million overseas, not including Japan, where it is yet to open.
Robert Downey Jr.’s three-quel is breaking box office records passing the $1 billion in earnings.
Even with all its success Man of Steel still hasn’t managed to crack the top 50 highest grossing films of all time, but this does not mean that director Zack Snyder and company should be disappointed.
Some slammed Man of Steel for being too focused on Superman struggles with his alien condition and feeling like an outsider since he was a young boy.
To put things in perspective, the first installment of Iron Man brought in $585 million and Christopher Nolan’s Batman saga’s first film earned only $375 million in 2005.
With the prospect of a Man of Steel 2, which has been rumored (Henry Cavill is signed on for a possible trilogy), the prospect of a blockbuster franchise is very real.
Another reason for Warner Bros. to feel great about the new reboot is that the last big screen adaptation Superman Returns had such poor showing that people wondered if that was the end of Superman in film.
We have to stay tuned to see if Zack Snyder and Henry Cavill make some new announcements concerning a possible sequel or even Justice League which is surrounded by rumors.
Warner Bros. announced that the pair will be present in San Diego Comic Con at Superman’s 75th Anniversary Celebration and promises to be a “star studded panel of including cast, filmmakers, artists and writers from Superman’s illustrious history.”
Man of Steel also stars Amy Adams, Kevin Costner, Russell Crowe, Michael Shannon, and Diane Lane.
