The hit true crime documentary, Making a Murderer , will return to Netflix for another season.

Making a Murderer’s first season centered on the life of Steven Avery and his trial for murdering Teresa Halbach in Manitowoc County, Wisconsin. The series ended with a guilty verdict being handed to both Avery and his nephew, Brendan Dassey.

What will Season 2 reveal?

According to the Verge , the new season will explore Avery’s life behind bars and introduce his new team of lawyers who are fighting to prove his innocence.

In Season 1, fans learned that Avery spent 18 years in prison for sexually assaulting a woman in 1985. He was later exonerated after DNA proved he wasn’t responsible for the crime.

Twenty years later, the Manitowoc County police arrested Avery for the murder of Halbach, a photographer in the area. The documentary followed the investigation and subsequent trial that found Avery and Dassey guilty.

Making a Murderer highlighted inconsistencies in the case against Avery and Dassey and made a point to show how the police were inept. Avery’s lawyers even accused the officers of planting evidence and forcing Dassey to confess.

Once the series premiered on Netflix it became a massive hit for the streaming service. Part of the show’s success was in how it portrayed the police, with many fans believing Avery was wrongfully accused a second time.

Although the case is now over, Avery’s new attorney, Kathleen Zellner, was able to get a motion passed to present new evidence to the court. The evidence involves some of the blood police found in Halbach’s vehicle.

The new season will likely follow Zellner’s efforts to get a new trial, as well as her interactions with Avery and the rest of his family.

According to Coming Soon , Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos will once again helm the series and are looking forward to another chapter in the case against Avery and Dassey.

“We are extremely grateful for the tremendous response to, and support of, the series. The viewers’ interest and attention has ensured that the story is not over, and we are fully committed to continuing to document events as they unfold,” they shared.

Considering the first season’s success, Netflix didn’t hesitate to give the producers a green light to continue their work on Making a Murderer .

“Because of Ricciardi’s and Demos’ incredible vision, commitment and a keen eye, audiences around the globe became completely captivated by the personal stories of Steven Avery and Brendan Dassey and the unique lens their experiences provide into the criminal justice system,” Lisa Nishimura, the VP of Documentary Programming for Netflix explained. “We’re thrilled to be continuing our longstanding relationship with the filmmakers, and look forward to giving our global viewers eagerly anticipated updates on this story.”

It isn’t known how many episodes the new season will include and whether or not a second season will be the last. If Zellner is able to get a new trial for Avery, then another season might become a reality.
