The sequel to Magic Mike is still moving forward.
If you were overly concerned that the follow-up to Steven Soderbergh’s box office hit wasn’t going to happen, then the director’s recent comments should be music to your ears.
However, it would appear that Soderbergh’s won’t be returning to direct the Magic Mike sequel. While he said he intends to help out with the project, the filmmaker won’t be stepping behind the camera. Soderbergh explained that he wants the next film to get just as good as the first.
While chatting with the folks at Pride Source about his upcoming HBO film Behind the Candelabra , the acclaimed director discussed the status of Magic Mike 2 . According to Soderbergh, the sequel is getting “pretty far along.”
The filmmaker explained:
“There were some stories and events that Channing lived through that we just couldn’t fit in the first one. One of them is a really hilarious and very cinematic idea that we reluctantly didn’t put in the first film, because it was such a big idea you could build a whole film out of it – but we didn’t want to build that film out of it. It’s perfect for this, though.”
The cast from the first flick is expected to reprise their roles for the next installment.
The Ocean’s 11 director explained that the Magic Mike sequel will not be a “retread.” He also stated that the follow-up will spend more time with all of the characters. However, there’s no word when the film will be on its way to theaters.
Although Steven Soderbergh previously stated that he was retiring from acting, he is now calling it a “break.” He said he intends to step away from “that specific kind of work for a while to see if I can tear everything down and rebuild it.” In other words, there’s a strong chance he’ll direct again.
