It’s official: Macy’s dumped Donald Trump. A petition was going around for the department store giant to cut ties with the Republican presidential candidate after he made disparaging comments about illegal immigrants — and it garnered enough signatures to take yet another thing away from Trump. MSN reports that the petition racked up 700,000 signatures .
Trump has dug a hole for himself after calling Mexican immigrants rapists, killers, and drug runners. His outspoken views have cost him a relationship with Univision and the NBC network. Now, we can add Macy’s to that list. A lot has happened in a short amount of time since he uttered his opinions of undocumented immigrants.
In a statement to CNN , Macy’s revealed that it dumped Donald Trump as one of their biggest names because they have “no tolerance” for racist views, and that what he said is “inconsistent” with its values.
“We are disappointed and distressed by recent remarks about immigrants from Mexico. We do not believe the disparaging characterizations portray an accurate picture of the many Mexicans, Mexican Americans and Latinos who have made so many valuable contributions to the success of our nation. In light of statements made by Donald Trump, which are inconsistent with Macy’s values, we have decided to discontinue our business relationship with Mr. Trump and will phase-out the Trump menswear collection, which has been sold at Macy’s since 2004.”
Macy’s famously carried a long line of Trump-brand merchandise that included men’s dress shirts, ties, and cufflinks. The billionaire businessman has also appeared in Macy’s commercials.
The petition urging Macy’s to cut off Trump began at MoveOn.org . As of Wednesday morning, the goal of 700,000 signatures was obtained, and Macy’s heard the message loud and clear.
The petition reads as follows.
“Donald Trump does not reflect ‘the magic of Macy’s.’ Macy’s says it has a strong obligation to be ‘socially responsible’ and that ‘actions speak louder than words.’ Indeed. It’s time to act.”
Angelo Carusone was the one who launched the “Dump Trump” movement in 2012 in protest to Trump’s “birther” rants about President Obama.
This is a happy day for Carusone. The executive vice president of Media Matters told CNN that he’s pleased that Macy’s dumped Donald Trump over his bold remarks made against illegal immigrants.
“The statement itself (from Macy’s) basically confirms what we’ve been saying since day one: His brand, which is bigoted bullying, is inconsistent with Macy’s brand. There’s a line between being very opinionated and expressing yourself and communicating that and being reckless and destructive.”
