Lana Del Rey’s fans have something new and exciting to celebrate. After getting an Oscar snub from the Academy Awards for her song “Young and Beautiful” which played in The Great Gatsby , Rey has decided to release a previously unreleased track that’s being described as a “moody anthem” titled “Behind Closed Doors.”
Pieces of “Behind Closed Doors” has existed for a few months, but now Lana Del Rey fans have the finished version of the song, or at least the most mastered version that they will hear of the song. The singer, who has an upcoming album called Ultraviolence coming out in May, probably won’t release this song on her third album. That said, we’re going to assume that this Lana Del Rey track is a b-side that got lost in the fray.
Grounding this track in a pop sound that sounds more like Kylie Minogue or Robyn than her signature sound, “Behind Closed Doors” doesn’t seem to fit with Lana Del Rey’s usually dream-like sound that she achieves on most tracks. “Behind Closed Doors” has an uncharted waters quality to the track. It’s surprisingly upbeat for Lana Del Rey, whose music can make a listener feel like they’re walking in slow motion. Perhaps this is the way Lana has decided to answer her critics who claim that she’s a one trick pony.
Although we don’t know of Lana Del Rey’s intent behind this random release, it’s a pretty good move to stay relevant and to gear up for that May release of her new album.
Of her Ultraviolence album Lana said:
“It is absolutely gorgeous – darker then the first – so dark it’s almost unlistenable and wrong. But I love it. X”
Back in October, the singer was a little more hesitant to tell Nylon about her album :
“When people ask me about it, I just have to be honest — I really don’t know. I don’t want to say, ‘Yeah, definitely — the next one’s better than this one,’ because I don’t really hear a next one. My muse is very fickle. She only comes to me sometimes, which is annoying.”
In addition to “Behind Closed Doors” it was announced that Lana Del Rey will perform at yet another festival. This time around it’s the Sweetlife Music Festival, which offers up a pretty decent set which includes Lana Del Rey, Foster the People, Capital Cities, and 2 Chainz. With other acts like St. Lucia and Bastille, 2 Chainz seems to be the only one out of place on this list.
If fans want to see Lana Del Rey, they can purchase tickets and still feel like they’re making some sort of difference in the world. All proceeds for ticket sales go toward the Sweetgreen in Schools charity.
