Ryan Murphy confirmed Sunday that Lady Gaga will star in the new season of the acclaimed U.S. television series American Horror Story.
In what is being billed as the “darkest, spookiest AHS season yet,” Murphy revealed to the assembled audience at San Diego Comic-Con that Gaga had contacted him expressing an interest in appearing in the show.
Recalling Lady Gaga’s initial correspondence with him, she’d said “I love the show, would you consider putting me on it?” Murphy was naturally thrilled by her interest, and immediately began thinking of ways to include her in the show.
Murphy told fans that part of Lady Gaga’s role will involve fashion and creative domain names, and she is currently “working with the costume designers for her character.” Lady Gaga won’t be singing in the show, but she did have clear ideas of the kind of character she wanted to play.
“She said, ‘I want to be evil,’ and I said, ‘You came to the right place’” Murphy said.
Although Lady Gaga’s name in the show has yet to be revealed, it has been confirmed that fans’ favorites Evan Peters is Mr. March, Sarah Paulson is Hypodermic Sally, and Kathy Bates is Iris.
Lady Gaga will be further joined by a distinguished roster of cast-mates , including amongst others Cheyenne Jackson, Matt Bomer, and Max Greenfield.
It was revealed last year that previous seasons of the anthology are all interrelated , and the return of former AHS characters looks set to continue this theme. But as to how they will all connect, we don’t yet know.
“Characters from previous seasons will come back and check into the hotel.” Murphy admitted, but promised all would make sense by the end of the series.
However, Murphy is remaining tight lipped about precise plot details, other than revealing that “everyone on the #AHS panel are bad boys and girls this year” and that Sarah Paulson’s character “may not live this time.”
One thing we do know, however, is that Jessica Lange won’t be returning to the show just yet, even if Lady Gaga is. But to rapturous cheers from the crowd, Murphy hinted that the star may still make an appearance a few years down the line. Lange herself has remained open to the possibility of appearing again, so fans should keep their fingers crossed for now.
American Horror Story returns on FX in October.
