Is Lady Gaga biting the hand the fed her for years? By now we all know that her album ARTPOP was a commercial disaster, and wasn’t received well by critics. Now that Lady Gaga has distanced herself away from pop music with a whole new jazz album, she has a new perspective on the genre of music.
The Cheek to Cheek singer sat down for an interview to talk about her new album with Tony Bennett and the state of pop music.
When asked about how she likes to market her album, and if she digs the unconventional ways her peers have released albums (U2, Beyonce), she had a very interesting response .
“I really believe it lies in the hearts in the people that are writing about the music. The more we honor and support the artist, the more the art will live on forever. Otherwise, it’s going to continue to be what I think pop music is now, which is sort of this giant tabloid. It’s become quite trashy in my opinion.”
Kind of an odd statement from a musician who, prior to her work on Cheek To Cheek , heavily relied on the popular themes and sounds in pop music to create several successful albums.
That said, this has been a year of change for the singer. After her failed album, she let go of her manager, Troy Carter, and strayed away from the big outfits she was popular for wearing. Working with Carter specifically on ARTPOP was unpleasant for the singer, and it all came to a head.
“Part of what was making my sort of artistic experience so unpleasant was that I felt that I was not able to truly freely fly as an artist. In some ways my talents were not being used to their full potential.”
She continued, “My schedule was way too difficult, I was not able to keep up and my whole business became very focused on making as much money as possible as quickly as possible, which is really not where my heart is.”
As The Inquisitr previously reported, the singer is gearing up for her first jazz album release. The album is a collaborative effort with Tony Bennett, and one that might produce a second album from the odd pair.
On working with Bennett, Gaga alluded that the singer gave her the courage to return to music after being panned by critics .
“Six months ago I didn’t even want to sing anymore. The other day, Tony said, ‘I’ve never once in my career not wanted to do this.’ It stung. Six months ago I didn’t feel that way. I tell Tony every day that he saved my life. I was so sad. I couldn’t sleep. I felt dead. And then I spent a lot of time with Tony. He wanted nothing but my friendship and my voice.”
Gaga and Bennett’s album is out now.
