Kentucky clerk of court Kim Davis’ appeal is being supported by Mike Huckabee, who plans on rallying support for Davis while she sits in jail. Davis’ appeal has sent the ruling of U.S. District Judge David Bunning to the 6th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals, where she is asking for accommodations that would allow her name to be removed from any gay marriage licenses issued by her deputies.
In a related report by the Inquisitr, Judge Bunning has told Kim Davis that “every public official is subject to the rule of law,” but Mike Huckabee believes Davis’ jailing can be compared to the Dred Scott slavery ruling. Davis’ lawyer has also compared his client to Martin Luther King Jr. and has claimed that opponents are like Nazi Germany.
According to the lawyers, Kim Davis’ appeal would seek to release her from jail immediately based upon several conditions.
“We would like them to release her from jail and provide reasonable, sensible accommodation so she can do her job,” one of her attorneys, Horatio Mihet, said in a statement, according to CNN . “That would be taking her name off of marriage licenses in Rowan County and allowing her deputies to issue the licenses.”
According to Mike Huckabee , Kim Davis’ appeal is fair since the laws surrounding marriage would seem to support her stance.
“[C]an you cite for me what statute Kim Davis would be required follow in order to issue a same-sex marriage license in Kentucky when her state specifically says, by 75 percent of the voters, that marriage means one man, one woman? Can you cite the statute at the federal or state level that she’s supposed to follow? Even the very form that she fills out specifically lists a male and a female,” Huckabee said, according to Jezebel . “We either are a people of government, a people of law, and we are a nation of the people, or we are a nation under the power of the Supreme Court.”
Over the weekend, about 300 people rallied in support of Kentucky clerk Kim Davis. Judge Bunning previously indicated Davis could be in jail for a week, but since she still refuses to give in to the judge’s demand it is possible her stay in jail will be indefinite. Huckabee plans on visiting Davis today, Tuesday, during another rally.
Christian pastor Franklin Graham has also supported Mike Huckabee’s stance over the weekend.
“As Americans, our constitution guarantees religious freedom which means we should be able to live out our faith in our daily lives. Mike Huckabee called this ‘the criminalization of Christianity,” Graham said on Facebook. “As Kim fights this battle, she is really fighting for religious freedom for all of us. Let’s continue to pray for her, and that Judge David L. Bunning will have a change of heart.”
