Scandal star Kerry Washington reportedly married San Francisco 49ers cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha in a private ceremony last month.
According to ET Online the 36-year-old actress and 31-year-old football player were married on June 24 in Hailey, Idaho. Washington’s mother and father, Valerie and Earl, served as witnesses.
Washington was previously engaged to actor David Moscow from October 2004 to March 2007.
The newlyweds are both dedicated philanthropists and activists. Asomugha has received numerous awards for his community service, including the President’s Volunteer Service Award and the Byron “Whizzer” White NFL Man of the Year Award, the NFL Player’s Association’s highest honor. He was also nominated for the Byron “Whizzer” White Award for Outstanding Communtity Service from 2005 to 2009.
Nnamdi Asomugha became the ambassador for United Way of the Bay Area in 2010, and serves as chairman for the Asomugha Foundation, which operates two programs: Orphans and Widows In Need (OWIN) and Asomugha College Tour for Scholars (ACTS).
Kerry Washington is a member of the Artists Committee for Americans For the Arts, and was appointed to President Obama’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities in 2009. Washington said, “I believe in the inherit value of the arts and the humanities and in protecting the vital role that culture plays in society.”
The Django Unchained actress received the President’s Award for Special Accomplishments and Philanthropic Efforts , which is given in recognition of special achievement and exceptional public service, at the 44th NAACP Image Awards in February. Past honorees include President Bill Clinton and legendary actress Ruby Dee.
Washington is also a member of the V-Counsel, a group of advisors to V-Day, the global movement to end violence against women and girls. She has also received the Women’s Project Women of Achievement Award, the GWU Alumni Association’s Recent Alumni Achievement Award, and the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation Phoenix Award. She has also campaigned for President Obama and spoke at the 2012 Democratic National Convention .
