A lot of fans firmly believe that Kendrick Lamar deserved to take home the trophy for Best Rap Album at the 2014 Grammy Awards.

The honor ultimately went to Macklemore and Ray Lewis for their record The Heist . Even Macklemore said in an interview ahead of the awards ceremony that Lamar deserved to win the Grammy . However, the trophy ultimately ended up in his musical hands.

Quite a few people were a little irritated that a white rapper won Best Rap Album. One person who’s definitely upset about Kendrick Lamar’s Grammy snub is Ty Dolla $ign. During his conversation with Hot 93.7 in Hartford, the rapper shared his opinion on the subject.

“The only way for us to win is to dye our skin cells like Michael [Jackson]. It’s all good, [Kendrick] definitely deserved something. He definitely had the best album, definitely was the best new artist,” he explained.

The rapper continued, “But Macklemore, I’m not hating on him, it’s something different to the game. I like his stuff too, I like his production on his songs, too. But Kendrick still should have won.”

Another person who wasn’t particularly thrilled with Kendrick Lamar’s snub at the Grammy was India Arie. The singer-songwriter definitely knows a thing or two about getting the shaft at the awards ceremony. Although she received seven nominations for her debut album Acoustic Soul back in 2001, Arie didn’t take home a single trophy.

Shortly after 2014 Grammys, India addressed the situation on her official Tumbr page. Not surprisingly, she wasn’t at all happy with the way the evening played out.

She wrote:

“@Kendricklamar WAS robbed, BUT he was not the only one who was robbed. Personally, I was pleased he was able to perform and they KILLED! IT! One of the FEW moving moments of the night for ME. Though it’s called ‘Music industries biggest night’ the #Grammys are NOT about the music, it’s a popularity contest. The voting process allows people, to vote on name recognition alone — the music industry politics is a whole NUTHER conversation. Too much to go into here.”

However, Kendrick Lamar seemed to take the loss in stride. Although he was definitely bummed about losing the Best Rap Album award, he didn’t throw any shade in Macklemore and Ray Lewis’ general direction.

“It’s well deserved; he did what he did, man. He went out there and hustled and grinded. Everything happens for a reason; the universe comes back around, that’s how it go,” the rapper explained to XXL magazine .

He added:

“I definitely feel like they should always have more of the culture up in there, for sure, because we definitely stand out just like any other genre. We part of the world. We part of the movement. So I think any awards, including the Grammys, should always push for more hip-hop because it’s music as a whole, it’s not just splitting different regions,” he continues. “Everything moves as far as sound and vibrations, and that’s how it goes. And we are a part of that.”
