NBC announced Friday that Kelly Clarkson, Lionel Richie, Alanis Morisette and five other big-name artists have all agreed to appear on ‘The Voice,’ the network’s hit reality singing competition, which is slated to kick off its second season on February 5 after the Super Bowl.
“These renowned musicians will bring their unique and recognizable musical styles to the teams,” Paul Telegdy, President of Late Night and Alternative Programming at NBC, said in a press release. “They are well-respected singers whose invaluable experience will be a tremendous asset to Christina Aguilera, Cee-Lo Green, Adam Levine and Blake Shelton’s artists.”
The New York Post reports that Clarkson, the first winner of Fox’s American Idol, will coach members of country star and judge Blake Shelton’s group of competitors. Shelton’s country superstar wife, Miranda Lambert, is also set to join his team.
“The thing I love about The Voice is that they’re more mentors — they’re not judges,” Clarkson said of the show in an interview last September. “I would never really want to be a judge, just because I don’t want to break people’s hearts.”
Clarkson will appear in an episode that will air towards the end of March or the beginning of April, according to the Post.
As for the other guest mentors, veteran singer Lionel Richie will join forces with Jewel Kilcher in sharing some tips to Christina Aguilera’s team, while Green has brought in Kenny “Babyface” Edmonds and Ne-Yo to help mentor his team.
Meanwhile, Alanis Morissette and Robin Thicke will give advice to artists in Adam Levine’s team.
The network added that the guests will offer their services during the “battle rounds” of the series, which pits two artists from each team against each other to sing a duet.
In addition to being a guest mentor on The Voice , Kelly Clarkson is also scheduled to begin touring in mid January to support her new album, Stronger, and will also make a guest appearance on NBC’s Saturday Night Live for one of the show’s first 2012 episodes.
