Katy Perry got cryptic on Twitter earlier today when she sent her 56 million plus followers a strange message proclaiming, “Watch out for the Regina George in sheep’s clothing…”

So whatever did Perry mean by this totally out of context comment?

Well, it is connected to speculation during the past 24 hours in the press regarding an alleged new feud between Perry and Taylor Swift.

Perry’s mystery tweet was sent randomly, leaving her followers wondering what she was on about. It turns out that what she meant was a clever reference to the lead character of Mean Girls , played by Rachel McAdams in the 2004 comedy.

Us Magazine reported that rumors of the alleged Perry/Swift feud were sparked following an interview in the new Rolling Stone magazine in which Swift spoke about an “issue” she has with “another female artist.”

Taylor Swift spoke to the publication, making her feelings towards Katy Perry abundantly clear.

“For years, I was never sure if we were friends or not. She would come up to me at awards shows and say something and walk away, and I would think, ‘Are we friends, or did she just give me the harshest insult of my life?’… She did something so horrible. I was like, ‘Oh, we’re just straight-up enemies.’ And it wasn’t even about a guy! It had to do with business.

She basically tried to sabotage an entire arena tour. She tried to hire a bunch of people out from under me. And I’m surprisingly non-confrontational — you would not believe how much I hate conflict. So now I have to avoid her. It’s awkward, and I don’t like it.”

Swift confirmed that while the feud had nothing to do with a man, the two stars did both date John Mayer and that fact obviously sparked some rivalry rumors between them. The other thing is that both Perry and Swift were chart toppers at around the same time which may also have caused some bad blood.

Either way, it seems that the inspiration for Taylor Swift’ s new song is Katy Perry, despite the fact that an online poll found that 70 percent of 8,500 readers who voted thought it was inspired by Miley Cyrus.
