Katie Holmes forgets her Broadway lines , the actress has confessed to talk show host David Letterman.
Holmes appeared on Letterman’s couch just three days after former husband Tom Cruise to promote her new play, Dead Accounts . While chatting to Letterman in an eye-catching hot pink dress, the 34-year-old actress admitted she occasionally suffers every performer’s biggest fear and forgets her lines. Talking about a recent on-stage slip-up, Holmes said :
“A couple of weeks ago I had the moment that I’ve been dreading. Which was, I have this kind of big speech in the second act and it’s pretty important because it kind of goes along with the theme of the show. And I said the first line, and I’m looking at [co-star] Judy Greer and I’m supposed to be angry with her. And then the second line I didn’t remember. And I didn’t remember the third one. And I just looked at her like – [Holmes puts on a “horrified” face].”
Fortunately, the actress is a pro and managed to keep the production moving smoothly:
“Obviously, I knew what the point of the speech was so I made my way there.”
When Letterman asked how it feels when Holmes forgets Broadway lines, the actress responded:
“It felt like a good hour.”
The response of critics’ to Holmes’ Broadway comeback has been mixed. After the play’s opening night, Ethan Kanfer at the California Literary Review wrote:
“Holmes is emotionally believable, but struggles vocally.”
The Los Angeles Times was a little kinder:
“[Holmes is] charming, natural and, yes, about as fresh-faced as a moisturizer model. But there’s only so much that can be done with a Rebeck play that has more topical urgency (greed, ethics and banking funny business) than dramatic finesse.”
But the New York Daily News was less convinced:
“Holmes, a film and TV starlet notorious for being one-half of the now-defunct supercouple TomKat, plies her lopsided grin, furrows her brow, cranks her voice level to loud and lets down her long brown hair in a flirty move that the boys of Dawson’s Creek would appreciate. Unfortunately, Holmes’ efforts add up to zilch. The stillborn comedy she’s in is so stupefyingly unfocused that it plays like a draft, not a finished work.”
