Now that Rogue One is in cinemas and audiences are devouring it in all of its glory moviegoers are already looking ahead to future Star Wars movies.
Next on the horizon is Star Wars: Episode 8 , which is now less than a year away. That means that we should be getting the very first trailer for the sci-fi adventure relatively soon. Producer Kathleen Kennedy, who is the president of Lucasfilm and has been tasked with overseeing the development of the Star Wars franchise over the next few years, has now given us a rough estimate as to when the first trailer for Star Wars: Episode 8 will be with us.
Kathleen Kennedy informed Lizo Mzmiba of the BBC, via Comic Book , that we’re going to have to wait a few weeks yet for our first look at the film, though, insisting that Lucasfilm and Disney want to give Rogue One a little breathing space before then teasing Star Wars 8.
When asked about the planned release date for Star Wars 8’s trailer Kathleen Kennedy responded with,
“Pretty soon. We’re giving this [ Rogue One ] a little breathing room. Probably heading into spring, you’ll start to see things.”
While Kathleen Kennedy is currently trying to pinpoint when exactly Star Wars: Episode 8’s trailer should hit, Adam Driver, who portrayed Kylo Ren in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, a role he’ll reprise in Star Wars: Episode 8, recently admitted that he would like the blockbuster to be released into cinemas with audiences having seen no footage.
Adam Driver made this admission during his chat with Cinemablend , who asked the Silence actor whether he’d like Star Wars: Episode VIII to simply drop into theaters without any trailer. This provoked Driver to declare, “I’d love it, yeah,” as he insisted that it would be a “bold” choice that would make audiences even more excited for the film because they wouldn’t know anything about it.
Kathleen Kennedy’s comments suggest that’s almost certainly not going to happen, though. In fact, Daisy Ridley, who debuted as Rey in The Force Awakens and will pop up again as the character in Episode VIII , recently spoke to Empire Online about watching some footage from the blockbuster, but admitted that while the film’s director Rian Johnson was very happy with the footage he didn’t like showing it to her since it still wasn’t perfect.
Ridley recalled,
“I watched a sizzle reel. I went to go see Rian in the edit, and that was very…[makes excited noise] Rian sounds very happy. It’s very, very exciting. Rian doesn’t love showing stuff. I’ve seen bits and bobs, but he likes it to be done. So I think probably the first time I see it will be when it’s fully done. I don’t think anyone will see an early cut outside of the main editing team….”
During her discussion with the publication, which was to coincide with the documentary The Eagle Huntress , which she narrates and also co-produced, Daisy Ridley also confessed that she didn’t have a clue when the trailer for Star Wars: Episode 8 will be with us, while re-iterating Kathleen Kennedy’s point that it’ll come a little while after Rogue One is released. Daisy Ridley explained,
“No. I could probably ask, but Rogue One is out in like a week, so I guess we’ll let that come out, be amazing, let people respond to that first. One step at a time! I know there’s Celebration next year. Hopefully something will be shown there? That’s speculation, by the way.”
Star Wars: Episode VIII will finally be released on December 15, 2017, while Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is now in cinemas across the world, and it has already taken in the gargantuan amount of $290.5 million over its opening weekend.
