Kam Chancellor has ended his holdout and has returned to the Seattle Seahawks. Chancellor will play for the Seahawks on Sunday, September 27, giving the team an extra weapon in the secondary. A report from the Seattle PI states the team has not yet confirmed this news, but that Chancellor had texted ESPN’s Stephen A Smith with the announcement.
Chancellor has been holding out since the offseason in order to get more money in his current contract. He is currently under a four-year deal with the Seahawks but had only played one season of it so far. That eliminated much of the negotiating strength he had in this situation, and the Seahawks stepped away from the talks when the season began.
The Seahawks lost the first two games of the 2015 NFL season without Chancellor, showing how much the team may need him starting at safety again. Giving up 61 points is uncharacteristic of the defense Seattle has had in recent seasons, but getting Chancellor back is certainly going to slow down the passing attack of opponents.
Kam Chancellor missed all of training camp, the preseason, and the first two regular-season games. In the process, he has accrued quite a few fines that might be forgiven by the team. It’s not guaranteed that the front office in Seattle will just look the other way, though, as he stands to lose just about $2.1 million if the Seahawks take a stance against his actions.
This move is going to go a long way with the fans, as social media had started really turning against Chancellor in recent days. He could earn back the support of the fans very easily in Week 3 by having a great game against the Chicago Bears. As for what he had to say about the return, ESPN’s Adam Schefter posted it on Facebook .
“Ima go help my teammates that are understanding of my position and the ones who aren’t. God forgives all, why can’t i? Time to help us get back to the big dance. I can address business after the season. Me and Marshawn started a mission 2 years ago. I can’t let my Dawg down….Real talk.”
The Seattle Seahawks and Kam Chancellor take the field against the Chicago Bears at 1:25 p.m. PT at CenturyLink Field on Sunday, September 27. Both teams are 0-2 so far in the 2015 NFL season and will be looking to finally put a notch in the win column.
