Justin Bieber’s highly anticipated new single “What Do You Mean?” has arrived two days earlier than its scheduled release date of August 28.
As yet, the entire song isn’t out. However, a high-quality, 30-second preview of the track leaked late on Tuesday night and was posted at several websites, along with a picture that is allegedly the cover art for the single.
The full version of the pop-dub-tropical beat uptempo, was reportedly produced by Mason Levy , who co-wrote and co-produced “Boyfriend” on Bieber’s 2012 Believe album. Jason “Poo Bear” Boyd, who is a co-writer on “What Do You Mean?” with Bieber, may also be a co-producer.
On Friday, the single — which is the lead cut from Bieber’s November 13-due album — will be sent to all Top 40 radio stations in the U.S., and available to purchase on iTunes, Amazon, and perhaps elsewhere. It will also be streamed on multiple platforms.
After announcing the single over at On Air with Ryan Seacrest last month, the 21-year-old singer kicked off his celebrity-packed, 30-day countdown to its release. Bieber was also asked to describe “What Do You Mean?” and reveal whether it was sonically similar to “Where Are Ü Now,” his collaborative EDM/Pop hit with Jack Ü’s Skrillex and Diplo.
At the time, the Canadian singer said the song was similar to “Where” before adding that his new single is “uptempo,” “summery,” “poppy but cool,” and “fresh,” and is about his general inability to understand the art of decoding females.
Based on the 30-second snippet that’s just dropped, those descriptions were accurate. Direct Lyrics summed up the single as the “perfect song for the ‘summer-to-fall,’” and there’s no argument here.
Justin’s voice sounds as smooth as butter and bounces happily atop a warm, catchy-as-heck, muscular bass and beat-driven track, with an electro flute/windpipe riff threaded through it.
The snippet starts with the heartthrob singing over a chorus, “What Do You Mean? / Oh, what do you mean? / Said you’re running out of time / What do you mean? / Oh, oh, oh, what do you mean? / Better make up your mind / What do you mean?”
The middle 8 finds the confused-in-love singer crooning over stripped down piano and a ticking clock sound.
He laments, “You’re so indecisive what I’m saying / Trying to catch the beat make up your heart / Don”t know if you’re happy or complaining…”

Immediate impression? Leaks are never ideal, especially for high-profile songs. But, in this case, it’s likely the leak of the Bieber single will make people want to hear the whole song.
The snippet is incredibly more-ish, it’s such an optimistic track that you can’t help being lifted by it. So, Beliebers, August 28 is still D-day, and the countdown to being able to hear and support “What Do You Mean?” is still two days away and on schedule.
Are fans ready? Based on a quote shared by radio host, Elvis Duran, from New York’s Z100 station earlier today, taken from a pre-taped interview with the singer which airs on Friday, Justin Bieber certainly is.
