Jurassic Park is now part of the $1 billion club.
The classic 1993 movie was re-released in 3D this year and after a big weekend in China it’s international gross has topped $1 billion.
The Wrap reports that Jurassic Park didn’t play in China during its initial theater run back in the 90s so fans flocked to theaters this weekend. The dinosaur movie took in $30 million overseas ($28.8 million of that came from its debut in China) which brings its global total since its re-release on April 5 to about $90 million.
Box Office Mojo notes that Jurassic Park has not broken through the $1 billion barrier. The Steven Spielberg movie has made more than $400 million at the domestic box office, more than $600 million at the global box office, and now stands with a worldwide total of $1,004,553,882.
That places Jurassic Park at number 17 on the all-time highest grossing movies list. Coincidentally, it is also the 17th movie to break the $1 billion barrier.
James Cameron claims the top two spots with Avatar and Titanic while last year’s The Avengers sits at number three. The rest of the billion dollar club is made up of blockbusters like Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 , the newest James Bond movie Skyfall , Pirates Of The Caribbean and The Dark Knight Rises .
The Hollywood Reporter notes that the Jurassic Park franchise has netted $1.9 billion. That number is bound to grow in 2015 with the release of Jurassic Park 4 .
