Joss Whedon Talks ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy,’ Female Characters, Quicksilver And Silver Witch

Joss Whedon, the director of The Avengers and its upcoming sequel, has been talking about the forthcoming projects of the Marvel film series, plus he has revealed his original thoughts about a Guardians of the Galaxy movie.

Whedon told Collider , “It seemed out there to me. I sort of went, ‘I don’t know about this.’” However he soon changed his mind because of one character, a certain Rocket Raccoon.

Whedon continued, “Then they brought on [director] James [Gunn], As soon as they said James, the movie started to make sense to me in a way it hadn’t. This isn’t a guy that is going to chase Star Wars . He’s going to make a James Gunn movie. And James’ first thing was, ‘I love Rocket. It’s all the raccoon.’ And a lot of people were like, ‘really, a raccoon?’ And he’s like, ‘the raccoon is the heart.’ And knowing that, I felt very safe.”

He went on to add, “I was just there before they started production, and seeing all the designs, I got really jealous,” Whedon added. “I was like, ‘why can’t I make this movie?’ I really got turned a hundred and eighty on that one.”

Whedon also found time to talk about the lack of female characters in movies, stating, “We’re just people. Obviously there are differences between men and women, but deep down, the same ambitions, the same jealousies, the same fears — they may articulate and be structured differently, but we’re all just folk. I don’t understand anybody who can’t write everybody.”

The director also talked about the addition of Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch to The Avengers ensemble, admitting they’re a huge part of the team.

Whedon remarked, “I’m really excited about it. I don’t know what they’re doing and I’m determinably not knowing. They’ll do their thing. I have to do mine.”

Are you looking forward to Guardians of the Galaxy ?
