Joss Whedon, the director of Avengers: Age of Ultron , has up and quit Twitter just a few days after the domestic debut of the film. There are a lot of rumors floating around as to why he has not only quit Twitter, but completely deleted his account. Some think he is just tired of it, but others are saying that it’s because of harassment he has received over his portrayal of the female Avenger — Black Widow.
Whedon’s account had 1.14 million followers on Twitter, and he decided to post a few final messages for all of them, per Digital Spy . His second to last tweet spoke of his film finally being released.
“Now I may me down to sleep I pray the lord my soul to keep If I should die before I wake ‘kay.”
King of cryptic and not really saying a whole lot, but he still had one more to throw out there.
“Thank you to all the people who’ve been so kind and funny and inspiring up in here.”
After that, he was gone. Joss Whedon’s Twitter account has officially been deleted, and he isn’t getting it back. He could always start a new account, but this one is gone and people want to know why he did it.
One rumor going around is that he’s just exhausted from promoting Avengers: Age of Ultron , and is really just tired of talking about it. He has said in the past months that he’s just worn out, and it’s been Marvel all the time. While he’s proud of his movie, he’s just tired of talking about it.
With the film being released, being on Twitter only means more questions and comments and everything else about it.
Another rumor going around is that Whedon wasn’t dealing with the harassment over Black Widow’s portrayal in the film, played by Scarlett Johansson. Many have jumped his case for how her character appears in the films and the way she acts, per E! Online .
There is a minor spoiler ahead for Avengers: Age of Ultron , so read on at your own risk.
In the new film, the only main female member of The Avengers is kidnapped and taken hostage by Ultron. Some people have not been happy about that since there are several male characters that could have been taken as well. Apparently, they didn’t like that she was a big-time superhero, but still the “damsel in distress.”
Whedon hasn’t touched on this backlash at all as of yet. Many on Twitter think the backlash is justified while others think it is ridiculous.
Misogyny is an enormous problem. If you think Joss Whedon’s depiction of Black Widow is misogynistic, you have no idea what misogyny is.

This isn’t the first time Joss Whedon has “quit” Twitter, as he’s never been fond of the site. In the past, he was tired of being asked about a remake of Buffy the Vampire Slayer over and over again. Now, it’s likely about Avengers: Age of Ultron , but we may not know until he says the official word.
