Jordan Smith recently stunned the audience at the Super Bowl of Gospel 2016 celebration, and according to Rickey, the recent winner of The Voice simply killed “His Eye is on the Sparrow.” Jordan, who is from Kentucky, brought the audience at SBGC to their feet during his performance at the “seventeenth annual Super Bowl event of faith, family and football.” Smith’s fiance Kristen Denny, whom Smith proposed to on New Year’s Day, was also at the event cheering Jordan on. Smith was a sensation on The Voice 9 after his audition of “Chandelier,” when the coaches couldn’t believe their eyes when they saw Jordan. Smith’s rendition of the song left the coaches and the audience in awe.

The Super Bowl of Gospel is an event sponsored by BET, which took place at Oakland’s Paramount Theatre on Friday. The event was recorded and was set to air three times on BET on Super Bowl Sunday (today). According to the Super Bowl Gospel website , SBGC is the “first and only gospel event sanctioned by the NFL for Super Bowl weekend.” The website also says that “Grammy Award-winning, multi-platinum selling gospel and contemporary Christian and mainstream artists, marqee NFL players and the NFL PLAYERS Choir ” are featured “together on one stage for an evening of uplifting music and inspirational messages.” The website states that “PCF addresses all aspects of life by providing programs and assistance with medical, emotional, financial, social and community issues.”
In a press release by The San Francisco Bay Area Super Bowl 50 Host Committee, the creator and producer of SBGC, Melanie Few-Harrison, said, “We founded this event to bring even more inspiration and celebration to one of the biggest events of the year – the Super Bowl.”
“Each year we aim to make the Super Bowl Gospel Celebration bigger than the last with artists and special guests from all backgrounds. Given the rich musical history and culture of The Bay Area and a powerful line-up of talent, this year’s concert will be sure to kick off Super Bowl Weekend.”

The NFL-sanctioned SBGC is in its 17th year and always gives back to each Super Bowl host city. SBGC is donating funds to the NFL Player Care Foundation (PCF) this year. PCF is an independent organization that is dedicated to helping retired football players improve their quality of life.
Other artists who performed as well as Smith at the Super Bowl of Gospel event were Kem, Anthony Hamilton, Kierra Sheard featuring Canton Jones, Tye Tribette, Charles Jenkins, Jonathan McReynolds, and MD-Mike Phillips. Past artists that have performed at the event are Aretha Franklin, Pattie LaBelle, Gladys Knight, Marvin Sapp, Mary Mary and Fantasia along with other contemporary and gospel artists.
Smith won The Voice 9 last year and has developed a large Christian fan base due to his song choices such as “God Only Knows,” “Hallelujah,” “Great Is Thy Faithfulness,” and “Mary Did You Know.” Smith’s performance of “His Eye is on the Sparrow” at the SBGC is just another reason so many Christian fans love him. Smith is definitely set to be a great gospel star.
