Joel Madden Says He Begged Nicole Richie To Date Him

Good Charlotte rocker Joel Madden said he practically had to beg Nicole Richie to date him when they first starting going out.

Although the two would eventually tie the knot in 2010, the couple’s relationship began with a little persistence on Madden’s part. Richie apparently only dated the lead singer because he wouldn’t stop bothering her .

Joel Madden recently discussed his relationship with Australia’s 60 Minutes . While the two would later marry, he revealed that it wasn’t your typical storybook romance.

The Good Charlotte singer explained:

“I’m not for every woman, you know. Because a lot of women — I mean, obviously, your first thing is, ‘What do you want your guy to look like?’ And I’m not the tall, dark, handsome guy. But I think [you like me] once you get to know me — like how I got Nicole.”

Joel Madden admitted that he probably wasn’t her first choice, but he knew he would win Nicole Richie’s heart if he could just “get his foot in the door.”

“Sometimes I keep it to myself and sometimes I can’t help myself and I gotta tell the whole world how much I love her. I feel like the luckiest man alive to have my wife and kids. When the world outside breaks me down, they build me back up. Hope everyone out there finds this kind of love,” he wrote in a note to his wife .

One person who wasn’t entirely convinced about Joel Madden’s potential as a husband was Nicole’s dad Lionel Richie . The singer-songwriter said the Good Charlotte singer “was not Prince Charming, believe you me.”

The Madden Brothers

Although things may have started out slowly, the two eventually connected. The couple celebrated their second anniversary last December.

With Good Charlotte currently on hiatus, Joel revealed last year that he and his brother Benji intend to release an album as the Madden Brothers . The pair plan to record an album later this year. They will tour in support of the effort with Keith Urban .
