Jim Carrey may be starring in Kick-Ass 2 , but don’t expect to see him promoting the film anytime soon.
Carrey, who plays Colonel Stars and Stripes in the sequel to the 2010 film, said that recent events have changed his feelings toward the superhero flick.
“I did Kickass a month b4 Sandy Hook and now in all good conscience I cannot support that level of violence,” Carrey tweeted Sunday . He then apologized to the rest of the people involved with the movie and said that he was not ashamed of it, but that the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School last December caused a “change in [his] heart.” Carrey had previously written an op-ed about mass shootings , such as Sandy Hook, for the Huffington Post.
Kick-Ass , which is based on Mark Millar’s comic cook of the same name, follows teenager Dave Lizewski (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) as he tries to become a real-life superhero. Videos of Kick-Ass are posted online, and he eventually teams up with Big Daddy (Nicolas Cage) and Hit Girl (Chloë Grace Moretz), vigilantes who are bent on taking down gangster Frank D’Amico (Mark Strong, named John Genovese in the comic book series.)
The sequel follows Kick-Ass #2 , in which other masked superheroes inspired by Kick-Ass start popping up around the city. Colonel Stars and Stripes forms a team, and Kick-Ass joins them on patrol. Meanwhile, Red Mist (Christopher Mintz-Passe) forms his own team of supervillains to get exact his revenge on Kick-Ass for his father’s death.
Kick-Ass 2 is set to hit theaters August 16, 2013.
