Things haven’t been going well for the partnership between producer extraordinaire Jerry Bruckheimer and Disney lately. Today the studio announced, via an email, that the partnership is coming to an end in 2014.
Problems started earlier this summer when the “blockbuster” The Lone Ranger, starring Armie Hammer and Johnny Depp, flopped. Big.
Earlier this month, Disney announced that the new installment in the Pirates Of The Caribbean franchise was delayed.
Bruckheimer explains that the split is not due to the less than stellar showing Lone Ranger had, even with Depp as a main character, but it’s due to the movies he would like to make in the future.
The producer tells The Hollywood Reporter that it’s time for him to make all kinds of movies, not just Disney movies.
“We’re still working on Pirates and hopefully National Treasure , and we still have development at Disney.” Bruckheimer adds.
Speaking on moving forward, Jerry Bruckheimer said he wanted to resolve his deal with Disney before pursuing other avenues, but he is confident he will get a deal.
Bruckheimer defends his record saying that $10 billion at the box office is “not bad”.
And furthermore, he explains his belief that the terrible showing The Lone Ranger had at the box office is not the reason why Disney is ending the deal.
“I don’t think it is. We have a full body of work with them. It’s not about Lone Ranger . It’s more about the types of movies Disney is making, and the types of movies we want to make, in addition to Pirates .”
The move comes as no surprise, after the delay in release for Pirates Of The Caribbean 5 due to unresolved issues with the script and The Lone Ranger debacle.
Disney spent $250 million in the revival of Ranger and the Jerry Bruckheimer movie has only made $89 million domestically.
