January Jones: I’m ‘Raising My Son Alone,’ Won’t Give Up Father’s Identity

January Jones, who has so far resisted attempts to pry the identity of her son’s father, says she always knew she would be raising her son by herself.

Speaking to The Edit magazine, the Mad Men actress said: “I knew I would be raising my son alone,” before adding , “It was something I went in to knowingly, I was prepared mentally – and I was excited about it.”

Reflecting a very modern take on a woman’s ability to chart her own path, the 35-year-old revealed that when she first made her decision to be a solo parent, she didn’t — and perhaps still doesn’t — have “room for anything else” and that included a partner.

Comparing her refusal to publicly divulge information about her nearly 2-year-old son Xander’s paternity to her sex life, Jones explains:

“It’s just not something the public needs to know,” she added . “I don’t divulge my sexual preferences. There are parts of your life—no matter what your job—that should remain private.”

However, the actress did share the wise words she was told when she entered the business, saying:

“When I was starting out, other actors advised me to keep certain things close to the vest. When you become a public figure people want to know everything about you, and then [they] pick it apart—it becomes negative.”

For Jones, the only person who ever needs to know the truth about her son’s parentage is Xander himself.

“When my son asks those questions,” the actress said “I want him to [hear it from me]. I don’t want him to be able to Google it.”

In the age of tell-all memoirs, sex-tapes, reality shows, talk show confessionals, and the ceaseless blogosphere, Jones is a breath of fresh air don’t you think?

When it’s time for Xander to know where and who he comes from he will know it, without the world getting first dibs.
