Iron Man and Captain America are set to start a “civil war” on May 6, and while we have less than a month to pick a side, the film’s heroes are having their own debate. It’s part of a new movie clip just released as further promotional material before we finally see who wins, if anyone.
When Captain America: Civil War hits, the story will center around a division in the once-united Avengers. Unlike in the comic book story arc it’s based on, it’s the wave of destruction resulting from their past battles and the U.N.’s distrust of Cap’s old friend that force the government to enact a new law. This law states that any super-human or inhuman hero must register and submit to approval before doing anything beyond regular citizen means.

Iron Man (Robert Downey, Jr.) and Cap (Chris Evans) end up leading opposing sides after the new law hits. Steve Rogers wants to fight for freedom and defends his old friend Bucky (Sebastian Stan), whose previous actions made him a terrorist before he attempted to come back and fight alongside him once more. Tony Stark realizes his previous actions were irresponsible and agrees to enforce the new law, feeling especially bad about the whole Ultron incident.
The two heroes had a bit of a debate before they decided to suit up and take the fight to the physical level, possibly dividing the team forever. The video above shows that they didn’t come to blows right away. Iron Man and Cap obviously have very different opinions about how the team should move forward, and neither is willing to give in.
Cap starts with the statement, “Tony, someone dies on your watch, [you] don’t give up.” Tony replies by saying he’s not giving up, and Steve replies that they are if they’re not taking responsibility for their actions. “This document just shifts the blame.”
Don Cheadle’s James Rhodes counters him, “Sorry, Steve, that is dangerously arrogant. This is the United Nations we’re talking about. It’s not the world security council, not SHIELD, not Hydra.”
Cap replies, “No, but it’s run by people with agendas, and agendas can change.”
Iron Man starts in, “Good. That’s why I’m here. When I realized what my weapons are capable of in the wrong hands, I shut it down and stopped manufacturing them.”
Cap tells him, “You chose to do that. You sign this, you surrender our right to choose. What if there’s somewhere we need to go, and they don’t let us?”
Got into a debate yesterday.. I got your back Mr. Stark!???? @CaptainAmerica I stand with #TeamIronMan . #TweetMe https://t.co/8xOaMKqWdn

In the room is Vision, making his first appearance since Avengers: Age of Ultron , who represents the only positive result of what Tony Stark did “under the table.” The first result was Ultron, which nearly destroyed them. Rhodes and everybody but Scarlet Witch (Elisabeth Olsen) end up on Iron Man’s side, as revealed in previous trailers, so Cap is clearly outnumbered in this debate. Even Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) has a difficult decision to make, so it’s clear that sides haven’t been taken yet.

It’s still unknown if the team will find a common ground, like Batman and Superman did in DC’s latest, or if someone important will die and force one side to reconsider its options. In the comics, Captain America was shot and killed on his way to surrendering, forcing everybody else to re-evaluate their views, and we don’t know yet if this will be mirrored as Iron Man and Captain America face off on screen.
Whose side are you on?
