Australian singer Iggy Azalea said she was ordered to keep her signing on for Beyonce’s Mrs. Carter Tour a secret.
The tour has just been the icing on the cake of a big year for Azalea. The 23-year-old started off the 2013 as the opening act for Rita Ora’s Radioactive tour and signed with Island Def Jam in April. On July 29, she announced that she would be opening for Beyonce during the 17-date Australian leg of the Mrs. Carter World Tour in October and November.
Azalea met Beyonce at the Gucci charity event, Chime for Change, in England earlier this year.
“After which, I did a few shows here in New York at the Bowery and she sent some of her people down to check out what they thought of my show,” she said .
“Apparently she liked it and they called up the next day and said, ‘Do you want to come on tour?’ I had to keep it secret for so long, almost six weeks,” Azalea added. “I was just dying! I’m so excited to go on tour with her, so excited.”
Azalea — whose real name is Amethyst Amelia Kelly — said she is in the “designing stages” of preparing for the tour.
“We’re still working on what the set design is going to be. We’re in the early stages of costumes. Pucci made my dress tonight,” she said. “They make all [of] Beyonce’s customs for her Mrs. Carter Show and they’re going to be making mine.”
Iggy Azalea’s debut studio album, The New Classic , is set to be released October 1. The second US single, “Change Your Life,” is set to hit radio the first week of September. Before The New Classic, Azalea released an EP, Glory , on T.I.’s Grand Hustle label in July 2012. She also released a mixtape, TrapGold , on Grand Hustle in October 2012.
