Ian Somerhalder’s days on The Vampire Diaries are quickly coming to an end. With the seventh season almost a wrap, Somerhalder only has one more year to go before he parts ways with the hit series. Fans hoped to see Somerhalder and Nina Dobrev reunite in the upcoming season, but Dobrev has apparently rejected offers to reprise her role. Are Somerhalder’s family plans at the root of Dobrev’s decision?
According to Parent Herald , Season 8 of The Vampire Diaries will likely be the show’s last. The network has not made an official announcement about the fate of the show, but it will be difficult to move forward without Somerhalder. Furthermore, Kat Graham has also announced that Season 8 will also be her last.
With Season 8 expected to be the grand finale for The Vampire Diaries, fans expected Dobrev to reprise her role as Elena Gilbert at some point in the season. After all, the show left Elena’s storyline open at the end of Season 6, allowing plenty of space for her to return to the role in future seasons.
Unfortunately, it now appears as though Dobrev will not return in the upcoming season. Although the actress has not officially commented on the matter, her past history with Somerhalder might make it hard for her to make a return.
Somerhalder and Dobrev dated while working together on The Vampire Diaries . However, their relationship ended after Ian Somerhalder wanted to marry and start a family with his co-star. While things didn’t work out between Somerhalder and Dobrev, the former has moved on with his current wife, Nikki Reed.
In fact, Reed and Somerhalder’s marriage seems stronger than ever, and the two have expressed a desire to start a family together. In fact, Movie News Guide is reporting that this is one reason why Somerhalder is leaving the show.
Somerhalder has a long history of wanting to have kids. Now that Reed appears on board with his plans, Somerhalder is planning to leave The Vampire Diaries in order to start a new chapter in his life.
Of course, the notion that Somerhalder and Dobrev would reunite on screen led to some speculation of jealousy on the part of Reed. However, an inside source recently told International Business Times that Reed does not have a problem with her husband working with Dobrev in the future.
“The idea of Ian and Nina reuniting on screen for The Vampire Diaries doesn’t bother her one bit. She has no issues with this whatsoever,” the insider shared.
While Reed is fine with Somerhalder pairing up with Dobrev, the verdict is still out whether or not Dobrev even wants to return to the show. According to Celeb Dirty Laundry , however, there is a chance that Dobrev will make a cameo in the Season 7 finale.
The finale will feature Damon Salvatore (Somerhalder) venturing inside the evil vault located in The Armory. Whatever he discovers inside the vault is shocking, leaving some fans to speculate that Elena might be waiting inside.
It still isn’t known what Damon encounters in the vault, though Julie Plec has hinted that both the lead characters on the show will be forever changed by what they find. At the same time, there is a chance that Damon gets locked inside the vault and is unable to escape. Not only would this be a good lead into the next season, but it might introduce a way for Elena to re-emerge from her deep sleep.
The Season 7 finale of The Vampire Diaries , titled “Gods & Monsters,” airs May 13 on The CW.
