COMMENTARY | You don’t have to be a gun owner or even a fan of the Second Amendment to notice that Hollywood celebrities have elevated hypocrisy to a new level.
The recent recent “ Demand a plan to end gun violence ” campaign is exhibit A — for A-List.
Stars such as Cameron Diaz, Jamie Foxx, Jon Hamm , Will Ferrell, and many others used their celebrity status in the video to champion a gun control agenda of some kind following the Newtown shooting rampage at the Sandy Hook Elementary School and the subsequent controversial NRA proposal.
Yet virtually all of them vocally supported Obama for president, a chief executive who has launched drone attacks on civilians in the Middle East and allowed firearms to fall into the hands of drug cartels in the Fast and Furious scandal .
Hollywood stars have also adopted climate change as a major cause despite traveling in gas-guzzling limousines and private jets.
Like many lawmakers who advocate additional gun restrictions, some high-profile entertainers don’t leave the house without armed bodyguards at their side.
Every law-abiding citizen wants an end to gun violence and generally would support reasonable measures in that regard provided they don’t unduly restrict the constitutionally protected right to bear arms. But the very same A-listers calling for gun control have made a fortune appearing in movies and TV shows containing excessive amounts of gun play
As The Inquistir previously discussed in a related commentary , there is “slight” conflict of interest in the entertainment community when it comes to violent imagery (content that has been shown in various studies conducted over the years to apparently affect behavior).
With that in mind, YouTube user ma5one created a video remix (see below) that combined the celebrity demands for gun control in the PSA with violent footage from these stars’ very own movies and TV shows. Note: This is a safer-for-work version as an alternative to the NSFW version previously published.
How do you think Hollywood would react if restrictions were imposed on the First Amendment rather than the Second?
Even if you are a fan of action/adventure movies and some of the stars themselves, should ordinary citizens put forth an alternative demand for Hollywood to end its hypocrisy about gun violence? Should the people say “enough” to Hollywood’s gun culture?
