Helen Mirren is widely regarded as one of Hollywood’s most glamorous stars, but that doesn’t mean she’s adverse to cutting her own hair.
Speaking to Redbook magazine , The Queen actress revealed that due to the fact that she hates visiting the hairdresser on a regular basis she cuts her own hair most of the time.
“I can’t handle going to the hairdresser every six weeks,” she explained, “so I only go about once a year. In between, I get out the scissors and do something, usually rather disastrously.” Mirren also noted that, in the past, she has gone through this ritual the morning before “a big red carpet event” too.
However, despite her brazen attitude towards her hair, Mirren admitted that she can’t live without make-up, so much so that she even puts in on every day without fail. The 68-year-old conceded that, as she has gotten older, she’s had to put on “less and less,” but she teased that she really loves plastering herself with cosmetics.
“I love putting it on, and I get really into it: a little bit of this here, and little bit of that there,” she explained. “But then I stand back and look into the mirror and it’s awful! So I take it all off because I’ve gotten too anal about it. As you get older… you can get away with naked eyes if you’ve got red lips. Or red lips and sunglasses.”
Despite her age, Mirren is widely regarded as one of the most out-spoken women in the movie industry. Last year she attempted to convince the BBC into casting a woman to play the titular star of the channel’s flagship sci-fi show, Doctor Who . Unfortunately for her though Doctor Who’s producers decided to stick with type and eventually cast Peter Capaldi as Matt Smith’s replacement.
Mirren also proved that she was a bona-fide bad-ass when promoting Red 2 last summer. While discussing the film she revealed that she enjoyed holding a gun, even though she is moralistically opposed to the weapon.
“Apart from my moralistic feelings about guns, it just looked like a lot of fun,” she declared. “They trained me on small handguns, normal handguns, Berettas and all the way up to the Gatling gun, through the sniper rifles and so forth. I had an experience of shooting with real live ammunition, which was fantastic, a real education. I love being a bad ass, it’s just the best… But the more I handle guns, the less I like them.”
