For the most part a player commits to play in the United Football League for one year at a time. Sure there are a number of players who will be playing the third UFL season this fall, but they made the commitment one year at a time. The UFL has set up a system were teams can rebuild quickly. They can chose to protect up to 40 players from the previous season, or they can follow what the Hartford Colonials have done. Not resign a number of players from last year’s team (they had a record low in that category) and restock with unsigned free agents.
UFL teams are allowed to take 70 players to training camp with them. The Colonials had a low number of players on their provisional roster following the NFL draft and used those open spots to attract a lot of talent. To date they have inked 42 players to come in and work for new head coach Jerry Glanville.
They have landed some big name talent. Undrafted DE Chris Walker from Tennessee, they added QB Colt Brennan via the reserve/protected list and then signed his favorite target from the University of Hawaii WR Ryan Grace-Mullen. This team has made rebuilding their offensive line via unsigned free agents a high priority.
What we can tell so far is Glanville had a plan to improve the 3-5 2010 Colonials team and his Director of Player Personnel David Turned has gone along with him in rebuilding their roster. We should also note that local control of the teams over players and such looks to be paying off big for this league in its third year.
