Hannibal Buress is the comedian who sparked the firestorm of controversy related to decade-old allegations of rape against Bill Cosby, but now Buress himself is under fire for a number of rape jokes in his comedy arsenal.
Buress first touched on Cosby’s many rape allegations at a show in Philadelphia , chiding Cosby for placing himself as a voice of reason in the black community while escaping judgment on his own dark past. Close to a decade ago, a number of women stepped forward to accuse Cosby of rape or sexual assault at various points over the last few decades, though the cases found little traction in the media.
Buress appears to have changed that. A number of new accusers have stepped forward since the comedian called out Bill Cosby, including model Janice Dickinson.
But Hannibal Buress himself may have a rape problem. Though he is considered one of the most promising up-and-coming comedians, Buress himself has some controversial material including jokes about date rape. In one bit, Buress tells a story about inviting a woman to his home after a very late night at a bar and growing angry when she does not want to have sex.
Buress said (via The Daily Beast ):
“I was out one night, it was 5 in the morning. I’m talking with this girl. I decided to take a swing. I said ‘How about we go back to my place for some food and some drinks?’ Most women would say ‘Yeah, that sounds cool.’ or ‘Nah, I’m all right.’ But what she said was: ‘What type of food are we talking about? And what drinks are we talking about? Do you expect me to have sex with you if I come back to your place?” If you come back to my place at 5 in the morning, eat all my food, drink all my drinks, and you don’t want to have sex, I don’t want you in my life at all. What type of person would do something like that? That sounds like something a sociopath would do. Come to your place at 5 in the morning, eat your food, drink your drinks, leave at 6:30 without fucking like it’s cool? That’s a passive burglary.
Hannibal Buress did not respond to an inquiry from the The Daily Beast on the jokes, though the comedian himself is seeing a new wave of attention. As Cosby’s career appears to have hit a wall — this week both Netflix and NBC canceled projects he was working on — there are a number of stories focusing on Buress and his career.
