Fox News host Gretchen Carlson went no-makeup for an entire segment of The Real Story Friday afternoon in a commendable effort to discuss the “sexualization” of women in American culture. Too bad, when it comes to media, many have argued that her network is one of the biggest offenders .
Carlson teased the upcoming segment from a Fox makeup chair, claiming that what she was about to do has “never happened before on cable news.”
After returning from commercial break, Carlson had no makeup on, and said that it was the “first time in cable news,” anyone ever did.
Then she made her crucial point:
“Sex sells. But to 8-year-old girls, these days, it’s not easy to empower your tween daughter to become a confident young woman. Toy companies like Bratz giving dolls hourglass figures, sultry looks, and minidresses. Abercrombie designing push-up bikinis for teens. Today is International Day of the Girl, so let’s look at positive role models in the fight to let girls be girls.”
Yeah, okay. Good. But we’d be remiss if we didn’t point out that Fox News is often criticized for the very thing Gretchen Carlson protested by going sans-makeup. Fox News tough gals Megyn Kelly and Greta Van Susteren have had to corral some misogyny from time to time, and heck, even Gretchen Carlson hasn’t been immune to this.
Not only did she famously bounce last summer when Fox & Friends co-host Brian Kilmeade made a sexist joke , she very candidly admitted months ago that the network bosses never even let her wear pants.
Only skirts.
