Legendary golfer Greg Norman is lucky to be in one piece, after an accident with a chainsaw nearly severed his left hand, forcing the 59-year-old to be rushed to a hospital.
According to The Daily Mail , Norman posted a photo of himself lying in a hospital bed to Instagram. Through a hole in a purple foam covering, Norman’s bandaged left arm can be seen.
“Working with a chainsaw ALWAYS be respectful of the unexpected,” Norman wrote in the caption, adding “I was one lucky man today. Damaged, but not down and out. Still have left hand.”
On Sept 6th, Norman posted another photo of himself working with a chainsaw. The image shows Norman smiling on a beach next to a heavy branch that he’d just cut down.
“Time to trim the sea grapes today,” the caption reads. “Never ask someone to do something that you can do yourself. Love to work!”
The extent of Norman’s injuries was not immediately known. The Sydney Morning Herald reports that he spent time recovering in a U.S. hospital, although it did not specify which one. Norman owns several seaside properties in Florida.
Greg Norman was one of the most dominant golfers of the 1980s and 1990s. Popularly known as “The Great White Shark” or “The Shark” by fans, he won the British Open twice during his career. Norman had 20 PGA Tour wins to his name and was ranked as the World’s number one golfer for 331 weeks.
Taking to Instagram once more this morning, Norman posted a photo of himself smiling and giving a thumbs up at the spot where the accident occurred. Thanking fans for their support and well wishes, he referred to the purple foam block covering his left forearm as his new “fashion statement.”
Last year, Norman spoke out about the PGA’s drug testing policies as The Inquisitr noted at the time. Vehement in his insistence that any golfer using performance enhancing drugs was cheapening the game, Norman said that he was sickened by such players. Directly referencing an incident that involved Vijay Singh, who admitted to using a banned performance-enhancing substance, Norman cited it as proof that a drug issue existed within professional golf.
“How deep it is (the problem), I have no idea because we only do urine analysis instead of blood testing,” Norman said at the time. “If you really want to be serious about it and find about what’s really going on, we need to do blood testing. I think it’s disgraceful, to tell you the truth. The golf associations have to get together and step it up.”
