Reddit users rallied in support to help a man who had been suffering because of his wife’s excessive drinking. A man wrote a lengthy post on r/relationship_advice, describing his wife’s drinking habit during her pregnancy. The post is titled “My pregnant partner(37F)is drinking heavily, and I(40M) don’t know how to handle this anymore.” It began by detailing how the 40-year-old man had been with his 37-year-old wife for almost four years.

The two already had a two-year-old child together and were soon to welcome another. According to the post, the man’s wife was “three months pregnant with the second child” and had already begun drinking excessively. The woman was described as being in a constant state of “buzzed” or “drunk” on a “regular basis.”

The man revealed that his wife had a similar pattern in her last pregnancy, where she began drinking. However, at that time, the drinking began during the seven-month mark. The man assured that their first baby was healthy but required an early delivery since the child was underweight.

The man said he was “terrified” about the risks because of his wife’s alcohol use. He wrote about how the two have tried talking about the issue. However, owing to the fact that “90% of the conversations” took place when the wife was intoxicated, she would often get defensive and “act aggressively.”

The man revealed that he had come to know about his wife’s drinking habits recently, claiming that she even had a DUI arrest when she was just 18. DUI arrests are quite common, with various people arrested for it, throughout the year. However, surprisingly, reports reveal that the majority of the people who drive under the influence aren’t even arrested by the police, meaning the number could be way higher.

The post detailed the man’s ordeal, further revealing that the couple had children from previous relationships and that the man had “stuck it out” for the kids. The man asked how to approach his wife’s reliance on drinking and if it was time to call it quits on the relationship altogether.

Various users commented, urging the man to go to a doctor who could advise the woman. “Get your kid out of there ASAP. FAS is serious – alcohol withdrawal can happen to infants too – she needs rehab/professional help,” one user wrote, pointing to fetal alcohol spectrum disorder.

“Really sorry to inform you, but both children will be very heavily affected by this. Your first child might appear healthy, but what your partner has done will hit the children later on down the line,” another user wrote. Various users pointed to how FAS develops at the age of two or later, when the child develops reading skills, urging the man to take action quickly.
