George Zimmerman’s divorce followed just weeks after his acquittal in the shooting death of Florida teen Trayvon Martin, and it isn’t surprising that the massive public ordeal tanked the marriage of the high-profile defendant and the woman who went to bat in a big way to cover for her spouse.
Zimmerman’s wife Shellie Zimmerman was involved in an important twist in the case, charged for actions she took in the early stages of prosecution.
After seven years and the conclusion of the highly tense trial, Zimmerman was found not guilty on charges of second-degree murder, but his marriage did not survive the ordeal.
Global Grind has been following the Zimmerman case and reports that Shellie Zimmerman’s divorce demands have been discovered — and they’re pretty major requests.
Mrs. Zimmerman wants half of George’s wealth, which could include a settlement he may receive from NBC on a defamation claim.
The issue of assets and what may possibly be concealed could be interesting, as the couple were both accused of shielding money from the courts as prosecution began last year. The site adds:
“In addition, Shellie is asking that George pay for a permanent life insurance policy with her named as the beneficiary since he has “the financial ability to obtain such life insurance at reasonable rates… But there’s one other thing. Shellie, who said George left her with a shattered life, wants custody of the couple’s 2-year-old Rottweiler, Oso, and an 8-year-old mixed breed dog named Leroy.”
The George Zimmerman divorce filing was only announced last week, and the pair have been married for seven years. Shellie Zimmerman pleaded guilty to perjury charges in relation to her husband’s arrest and subsequent trial late last month.
