Latino actor and comedian George Lopez is taking some serious heat after using his Instagram account to suggest that Trump and his administration “deport the police.” Lopez made the social media comment over the weekend, and then temporarily made his Instagram account private, possibly as a result of the negative backlash his comment incited.

In full, George Lopez suggested that the Trump administration stop deporting Latinos and start deporting police instead. That is, if the POTUS truly wants to “make the streets safer.”

“The Trump administration is deporting Latinos to make the streets safer… You wanna make the streets safer deport the police.”

As Fox News reported, the star added a bit of a disclaimer to his suggestion, claiming not to be measuring all “Law Enforcement” by the same stick, and recognizing that “some just still beat you.”

“This is not an indictment of all Law Enforcement, some still just beat you.”

On Monday, George Lopez once again turned to Instagram to clarify his controversial Friday statement. His social media account was once again public, complete with the post that started all of the controversy. However, true to form the comedian attempted to laugh off his earlier statement about deporting police with his “apology” post.

Unfortunately for George, to many, his apology fell on deaf ears. According to Lopez, who posted a meme featuring the Sting band The Police, as well as the suggestion that it’s (maybe) time for them to be deported.

According to George Lopez, the latest post was intended to clear up “any misunderstanding” that may have resulted from his earlier deportation post. The comedian cited comedy and its “way of healing,” as well as sometimes hurting. Lopez also called on “cooler heads” to work out the drama his earlier social media post created.

“I hope this clears up any misunderstanding. Comedy has a way of healing, but I also realize it can hurt too, so let’s let cooler heads prevail.”

Many of George Lopez’s fans and critics alike have taken to social media to share their thoughts about his “deport the police” suggestion. Not surprisingly, some believe that Lopez crossed a line.

In going through the social media responses to George Lopez’s Friday statement and Monday quasi-apology, the vast and overwhelming percentage are negative and unforgiving. Many of those who took the time to comment on the comedian’s words claimed to be “disappointed” with Lopez, with some claiming that they were now ex-fans of the star based on his Instagram comment – and in spite of his apology.

It is unclear to what level the drama will have an impact on George Lopez’s career, which is largely based on his stand-up comedy.

George Lopez is slated to perform a live special for HBO at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. Called “The Wall,” the performance is scheduled for August 5.
