Firstly, some background.
For thousands of years, Jews have been expected to conform to the image decreed for them by whichever society they happened to find themselves in at the time.
Not since the revolt of Jews against the Romans in the second century have there been many meaningful attempts by Jews to deal with their oppressors.
As it happens, that revolt — led by Simon Bar Kochba — failed, with the result that Jewish cities were laid waste, over 500,000 Jews were killed in a clear case of genocide, and the few survivors dispersed to be traded in slave markets.
Thus arose the reason for the so-called “wandering Jew.” Over the centuries, the Jewish people spread across Europe, Arabia, and North Africa, often confined to ghettos, and with limited freedoms. It is true that, depending upon the character of the society or its leaders, there were periods when Jews flourished, relatively.
But there was no consistency, and their circumstances changed frequently over the centuries, Sometimes better, sometimes worse, but never really accepted either as equals, and often not even as human beings.
Fast forward a few hundred years, through the Spanish Inquisition and the expulsion of Jews from Spain, to the pogroms in Russia and Eastern Europe and on to “The Final Solution.” Never, in all of those years were the Jews expected to stand up for themselves, and certainly not actively defend themselves when attacked.
Could that be the reason that the world is having such difficulty with coming to terms with the fact of Jews doing just that? Is the problem that Jews are no longer willing to act out the role that the rest of the world has predetermined for them? Is this generation of Jews expected to go meekly to the gas chambers as did their predecessors — metaphorically speaking?
What else can explain the world reaction to the situation of thousands of (unguided) Palestinian missiles raining down on Israeli civilians? A reaction characterized by the mantra ” Yes, Israel has the right to defend itself, but…
The “but” means that the world will decide the degree of that defense ? A world subservient to Kingdoms, Dictatorships, and Sheikhdoms, whose power and influence is based solely on the “Black Gold” under their lands.
Once again — as if it ever really went away — Anti-Semitism disguised as Anti-Israelism, is on public display in cities like London, Paris, and Berlin.
Berlin!!
Unfortunately, Theodor Herzl, the ideological founder of modern Zionism, was mistaken when he wrote in Der Judenstaat that Jews would never be secure unless they had their own state. Perversely, it is the existence of that very state that is inflaming Anti-Semites, and Anti-Semitic acts, throughout Europe in particular.
Actually, it is the actions of that state to defend its Jews — and, by the way, one and a half million Arab Israelis are also protected by the IDF and Iron Dome — that is generating the hatred.
Sorry, Dear World, this time the Jews are not willing to follow their sacrificial role of two millenia.
Live with it!
