When it comes to Game of Thrones, no married couple has been through more than Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner) and Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage). It has been roughly two seasons, since Sansa and Tyrion last saw each other.
Since that time, Sansa remarried psychopath Ramsay Bolton (Iwan Rheon) and Tyrion sailed across the world to ultimately become Daenerys Targaryen’s Hand.
While it would seem they could not be further out of each other’s orbit when Season 6 concluded, recent Season 7 spoilers indicate they may be headed back in.
Warning: The following article contains spoilers for Game of Thrones Season 7.
Season 7 Spoilers
Based on what has been confirmed about Season 7 and reported by the Inquisitr , we know that Sansa’s brother/cousin Jon Snow (Kit Harington) will be venturing to meet Daenerys . While he is there, we also know that he will reconnect with his far-flung friend and maybe-brother-in-law, Tyrion Lannister.
Jon and Tyrion first met in Season 1 and bonded during their trip to The Wall.
Their relationship was cemented for a reason and Game of Thrones is making a point to circle back to it. A lot has happened since those days at The Wall and it should bring them closer. Will they discuss Tyrion’s marriage to Sansa? It is possible.
Are Sansa and Tyrion still married?
Sansa and Tyrion’s marriage was never officially dissolved. The last time they saw each other, they were legally married. Following The Purple Wedding, Sansa was escorted from King’s Landing by Littlefinger so she would not get caught up in Joffrey’s murder investigation.
Meanwhile, Tyrion was charged for his nephew’s assassination and later fled after being found guilty in a rigged trial.
When Sansa was off with Littlefinger, he talked her into marrying Ramsay Bolton. That marriage was treated as legally binding, despite the fact that Sansa was already married to Tyrion.
Bear in mind that since Tyrion and Sansa’s marriage was never consummated, it may not be viewed as valid, which could be the key to explaining how Sansa married Ramsay.
What if the marriage is still valid?
Then Sansa and Tyrion are married and given who they are now, they might be willing to make an effort towards a legitimate marriage.
A new sense of self
Sansa Stark has been through a lot on Game of Thrones . As she intimated to Littlefinger (Aidan Gillen) under the godswood of Winterfell, she is a far cry from the girl who arrived in King’s Landing all those years ago. Sansa is now an adult and given the kindness Tyrion showed her, it would make sense if she desired a rematch.
Likewise, Tyrion has completely shut off his romantic side, since experiencing the nasty betrayal of his great love, Shae. A woman he gave his heart too, and who subsequently ripped it to shreds by giving false testimony that helped him get convicted for a crime he did not commit. To add further salt in the wound, she then proceeded to sleep with his father.
Tyrion understandably seems to have lost his interest in romance. Who better than Sansa to bring it back?
The Ashford Tournament
Back in late September, YouTuber Alt Shift X posted a video outlining the controversial theory that Sansa would marry Jon Snow in Season 7. Part of that argument was based on a story from George R.R. Martin’s prequel A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms . In it, a historical event known as the Ashford Tournament is detailed.
To make a long story short, a Baratheon, a Lannister, a Tyrell, a Hardying (non-TV show character), and a Targaryen vie for the hand of Lady Ashford. Alt Shift X notes that this is the exact sequence of Sansa’s relationships (minus Hardying), and argues that Sansa and Lady Ashford’s love lives might be mirroring each other’s by design.
Alt Shift X ultimately contends that in the end, Sansa will marry a Targaryen and given that Jon is the only living male Targaryen left, he is the one she will wed.
The thing this theory presumes is that Jon is actually the last living male Targaryen.
Tyrion might be also be a Targaryen
You have probably heard this theory bandied about by now. Tyrion may actually be a Targaryen. If he is, Tyrion could be the Targaryen Sansa ends up with.
How could Tyrion be a Targaryen?
The theory is that Tyrion’s biological father is actually Aerys “Mad King” Targaryen aka Dany’s dad.
What would this mean for the Targaryen family tree?
If true, this would be mean that Tyrion is the illegitimate son of the Mad King, Daenerys’ half-brother, and Jon’s uncle.
Where is the proof?
As with the R + L = J theory, it is all circumstantial. The biggest hint actually occurred in Season 6 when Tyrion spoke about his ever-present fascination with dragons. He was also able to flawlessly interact with Dany’s.
Tyrion, Daenerys (Emilia Clarke) and Jon’s mothers all died in childbirth. Is it a coincidence?
Why was an emphasis put on establishing Jon and Tyrion’s friendship in Season 1? Is it because they are actually biologically related? Remember, Maester Aemon and Jon bonded as well and they turned out to be related as great-uncle and nephew, respectively.
Add to all of that Tywin Lannister’s deplorable treatment of his son, who he outright denied was his, and you have a strong case for the theory.
In summation
If Sansa is her generation’s Lady Ashford and Tyrion is a Targaryen, they might be destined to be together. Find out if any of these theories come true when Game of Thrones Season 7 returns next summer on HBO.
